Jandl Turns Over a New Leaf manipulates two poems by Austrian poet Ernst Jandl, Oberflèchenƒbersetzung and EO. Composer Hunter Ochs╒s interactive version of the poems reflects two elements of his living circumstances: after moving from Germany to the United States, his perception of similarities and differences between the German and English languages changed, an issue that Oberflèchenƒbersetzung deals with; his studies of computer music and algorithmic composition at the California Institute of the Arts defined the concept and aural side of EO.

About the Author
Hunter Ochs holds an audio/video engineering degree from Robert-Schumann Musikhochschule Dƒsseldorf (music conservatory) and Fachhochschule Dƒsseldorf (engineering school) in Germany. He came to the United States in 1993 to study music composition at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles through a grant for postgraduate studies from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Ochs is a pianist of classical and contemporary music, a recording engineer of orchestral music, chamber music, jazz, salsa, and tango, and a CD-ROM programmer. As a faculty member of the California Institute of the Arts, he taught interactive computer music and CD-ROM technology (assisting composer Morton Subotnick). Currently, Ochs freelances as a technician for simultaneous telecommunication concerts at the Electronic Cafe in Los Angeles and The Kitchen in New York, and he works as a Technical Director for Interactive Television for Time Warner Interactive in Los Angeles.
How to Run the Program
1. The text fonts won╒t be displayed properly if you have ATM (Adobe Type Manager) installed. To disable ATM, please
open your System folder
open the Control Panels folder
double-click ATM
click Off
restart your computer
If you don╒t have the ATM control panel on your computer you don╒t have to worry about this.
2. Copy the entire Jandl folder onto your hard drive (the one containing this file).

3. Open the Jandl folder on your hard drive.
4. Run the application by double-clicking ╥Jandl.╙
